The Clinical Academic Center ICBAS-CHP and the University Center for Medicine FMUP-CHSJ, which aim to strengthen and deepen existing synergies between two medical schools and the two main hospitals in Porto, will be officially established on Monday.

The Grand Hall of the Rectory of the University of Porto will be the stage for signing of the decree orders creating two consortia between U.Porto – the Faculty of Medicine (FMUP) and the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS) – and the hospital centres of Porto – Hospital Centre of São João, E.P.E. (CHSJ) and Porto Hospital Centre, E.P.E. (CHP).

The ceremony will be presided over by the Minister of Education and Science, Nuno Crato, and the Minister of Health, Paulo Macedo, and will also be attended by the Rector of U.Porto, Sebastião Feyo de Azevedo, the Presidents of the Boards of Directors of CHSJ and CHP, and the Directors of ICBAS and FMUP.
The main objectives of this agreement are reinforcing and deepening existing synergies between two medical schools in Porto and the two main hospitals in the city, thus promoting the improvement of research and medical education, as well as the provision of health care to the population, according to a statement issued by the University of Porto.

“Designed as integrated structures of assistance, education and medical research, the two new centres will combine the capacities of the two medical schools most sought after by Portuguese students with the recognised experience and quality of the two hospital centres of Porto,” the institution stresses.
From this “union of forces” it is expected that two hubs of “excellence and innovation” will develop, focused on the advancement and application of scientific knowledge to improve health, the University adds.
